"Spectrum, Chromatic Crossing" is a permanent installation composed of 44 coloured panels suspended above the pavements of the Berthier tunnel, on Boulevard Berthier in Paris’s 17ᵗʰ arrondissement, near the city’s new High Court. In homage to Newton’s prism, these panels display the full spectrum of visible light, forming a gradient from red to violet and back again. Equally distributed between the North and South passages, the panels in the North corridor transition from red to violet, while those in the South corridor move from violet to red.

Selected by the City of Paris in July 2022, the work was installed from 13 February 2023 as part of the extension of the T3 North tram line. It forms part of the artistic programme developed for previous sections of the tramway and was created in close consultation with local residents, through the drafting of a brief and the participation of representatives from neighbourhood collectives and councils in advisory meetings involving the City of Paris, the 17ᵗʰ arrondissement town hall, SNCF, RATP and an artist from the MU collective.

Conceived as an additional “lane” alongside those for buses, trams, cyclists, and cars, "Spectrum, Chromatic Crossing" transforms and accompanies the journey of passers-by, bringing light and colour to a space once defined by darkness and monochrome tones.

« Spectrum, traversée chromatique » est une installation permanente composée de 44 panneaux colorés suspendus au-dessus des trottoirs du tunnel Berthier, boulevard Berthier, dans le 17ᵉ arrondissement de Paris, à proximité du Tribunal de Grande Instance. En hommage au prisme de Newton, ces panneaux déclinent l’ensemble du spectre lumineux de la lumière blanche, formant un dégradé du rouge au violet et inversement. Répartis en nombre égal sur les passages Nord et Sud, ceux du couloir Nord passent du rouge au violet, tandis que ceux du couloir Sud vont du violet au rouge.

Sélectionnée par la Mairie de Paris en juillet 2022, l’œuvre a été mise en place à partir du 13 février 2023 dans le cadre de l’extension du tramway T3 Nord. Elle s’inscrit dans la continuité de la démarche artistique développée sur les précédents tronçons du tramway et a été conçue en concertation avec les habitants, via la rédaction d’un cahier des charges et la participation de représentants de collectifs de riverains et de conseils de quartier aux instances consultatives associant la Ville de Paris, la mairie du 17ᵉ, la SNCF, la RATP et un artiste issu du collectif MU.

Pensée comme une « voie » supplémentaire, au même titre que celles du bus, du tram, des cyclistes et des voitures, « Spectrum, traversée chromatique » accompagne et transforme le parcours des usagers, illuminant et colorant un espace initialement sombre et monochrome.
